Dear
Congressman,
Re: Bump
Stocks
Do NOT
allow yourself think that it’s appropriate to use bump stocks as a way to avert
more serious action on the much greater problem of guns in the United States.
This, I believe, is the aim of the National Rifle Association, in suggesting
support for a bump stock ban.
We need that,
AND more comprehensive action. No one is opposed to the possession of firearms
for the purpose of hunting. Most even defend the possession of handguns for the
purpose of self-defense. I myself happen to dislike the whole notion of taking
guns out into the forest to kill defenseless animals. And I believe that
handguns in the home are more likely to cause unintended harm than to defend
anyone. But I acknowledge those to be my views and do not seek to impose them
on those who believe otherwise.
I do,
however—along with a vast majority of my fellow citizens—believe that there
should be reasonable regulations covering the purchase and possession of
firearms. We require a competency test to drive a car; we require insurance for
each vehicle; and we deny licenses to those deemed less than competent to
drive, whether for physical or mental impairment. These are reasonable
regulations, Yet we impose no such restrictions on the purchase of guns, at
least at gun shows, where huge numbers of lethal weapons are bought and traded.
And there
are firearms—such as those used by the Las Vegas killer—which simply do not
belong in the hands of ordinary citizens. Their sale and purchase should be
strictly regulated.
We are
the only country in the world that permits this tragic, obscene, and seemingly
ever increasing number of victims to gun violence to continue. It is time for
you, as a member of Congress and my representative, to stand up against the gun
lobby and join with others to ACT NOW to address this shameful issue.
Respectfully,
Peter
Clothier, Ph.D.
