Dear Congressman.
Re:
Celebration?
I trust
we will not be exposed to the unseemly spectacle of a Republican end-zone celebration
on the passage of its unconscionable tax bill through the senate—though I
suspect we will. Perhaps, since it’s a weekend, no one will notice. A bill of
such transparent and cynical duplicity deserves no celebration on the part of
those who rammed it through at dead of night, allowing no time nor space for
discussion or argument, and with no consideration of the wishes of the people
they are supposed to serve.
I believe
in karma—the Buddhist principle of cause and effect: “whatever I do, for good
or for evil, to that will I fall heir.” This ill-conceived and bad faith action
on the part of Republican lawmakers will not go unpunished, whether in the predictable
economic fallout—several decades of trickle-down have failed to demonstrate the
validity of this right-wing fantasy—or in next year’s elections.
This
“Christmas gift to the middle class,” as Trump has absurdly called it, is a
mockery of everything we consider fair and just. We all know that it’s a gift
to the likes of Donald Trump. That you have chosen to support it casts shame on
you.
Respectfully,
Peter
Clothier, Ph.D.
